1.  United Visual Wins 2009 Spotlight Award.

Pro AV Magazine recently announced the 15 winners of its second annual PRO AV Spotlight Awards program. The Spotlight Awards recognize the best professional audio/video installations designed for corporate, educational, and other non-residential applications.

Entries in the 2009 PRO AV Spotlight Awards came from around the world, in vertical market categories, including; Corporate, Retail, Education, House of Worship, Government, Health Care, Entertainment/Arts, Museum, and Hospitality/Restaurant/Casino.

United Visual won the Spotlight Award for Best Education AV Project, under $250K, for our work at Illinois College of Optometry. United Visual is involved in professional AV integration projects with both corporate and education clients everyday and it is a wonderfully uplifting feeling when one of those projects is recognized as the very best in the world.

The Illinois College of Optometry project involved many classrooms but the centerpiece of the project was the Eye Lab. The architect designed the lab space in the form of an eye with space for at least eighteen refracting lanes containing LCD monitors in each lane. The AV system enabled the instructor to present and manage the lesson presentation in each and every lane. This was truly a unique and innovative AV solution. 2.  Knowledge through Technology From Atlas Learn!

Atlas Learn, a new division of commercial audio leader Atlas Sound, announces its official launch with the premiere of an in-classroom amplified learning system.  This patent pending Amplified Learning System, ALS, is designed for use in K-12 and higher education facilities or where a room constrained public address system is required.

The ALS (model number AL2430-2PH) is a complete audio enrichment system consisting of amplifier, wireless microphones, and docking station.  The teacher and students are able to walk freely around the room with the infrared microphones/system control units and project their voices through installed speakers.

The versatile and ergonomic AL2430 pendant / handheld microphone transmitter allows both teachers and students freedom of movement without bulky electronics or cumbersome wires.  The dual mode transmitter allows teachers to control microphone volume, overall system volume and mute settings via side mounted soft touch controls.  In addition, when "PANIC" and "MODE" controls are pressed simultaneously for 3 seconds a contact closure is triggered on the AL2430 receiver.  This contact closure may be integrated with most any intercom or IP based notification system to signal an emergency condition in the classroom.  When transmitter is configured for “student” mode operation, all controls are bypassed restricting the device's functionality for use as a wireless microphone only.  Atlas Learn's Infrared Microphones are capable of transmitting on one of two dedicated IR channels to allow a teacher and student response microphone to be used in the same space without interference.  Each microphone has three signal transmit emitters to guarantee reliable use with no drop-out whether the microphone is being handheld, on belt with external microphone connected, or on a lanyard.  With a hinged belt clip and ID mounting clip, the microphone in any position is lightweight and comfortable to use.

The included ALS docking station provides not only a secure location to store microphones when not in use but also a charging station.  The docking and recharging station will automatically recharge and maintain batteries in the microphone/system control units and accommodate up to 4 additional AA rechargeable batteries as spares.  Each microphone requires 2 AA batteries for use with an average operation time of 6 hours between being charged.

The integrated mixer amplifier has a 30W output.  Three RCA inputs on the back of the amp are for Infrared Sensors for signal points from the microphones (including two separate A and B channels at any time).  Five separate audio devices (labeled Computer, TV/VCR, CD/DVD, Aux and Priority Page) can also be inputted through dual summed RCA inputs with independent level controls.  With Atlas’s patented ‘through hole’ chassis design the amplifier can be pole mounted at projectors, rack mounted, or table mounted for various classroom setups.

Atlas Learn is the new education focused subdivision of Atlas Sound, part of the Mitek Electronics and Communications Group.  The Amplified Learning System is the first product released under the line which aims to improve classroom performance through integrated technologies at all education levels.  Through sound reinforcement, networked audio, and other learning systems, Atlas Learn will provide educational equipment designed with the industry leading reliability, easy of use, and advancements one expects from the Atlas name.

Atlas Sound has always been used in educational facilities from our PA speakers, and stadium horns to ControlKom and paging systems, but with the creation of Atlas Learn we are excited to have a group of products focusing on the needs and demands of this specific market group.  The ALS is a product that can truly help teachers teach and students learn without the usual cumbersome technology that scares people away from it.

3.  SMART Technologies Unveils SMART Response LE.

New interactive response system designed for early education

SMART Technologies announces SMART Response LE, the latest addition to its line of interactive response systems, which helps teachers quickly poll students for understanding.  SMART Response LE is designed specifically for young learners who may or may not be able to read.  It combines handheld wireless remotes (or clickers), a receiver and assessment software for creating questions and evaluating responses.  The remotes are equipped with five large, colorful buttons, and the LCD screen displays easy-to-understand icons instead of words.  SMART Response LE builds on SMART education solutions for early education, which began more than 20 years ago with the introduction of the SMART Board™ interactive whiteboard and continues today with products like the SMART Table interactive learning center.

SMART Response LE allows teachers to integrate interactive questions, quizzes and assessment activities in their lessons.  The tactile nature of the large, colorful buttons on SMART Response LE remotes engages young learners.  Assessment results can be displayed on an interactive whiteboard as graphs, which are easy for young students to comprehend.  The system supports three different kinds of questions – multiple-choice, true-false and yes-no.  Teachers can create and ask questions spontaneously during a lesson to gauge individual, small-group and whole-class comprehension and then adjust teaching based on this information.  Once a quiz is complete, teachers can organize and manage the results based on a variety of criteria for rapid analysis and reporting.  Like all SMART interactive response systems, SMART Response LE is tightly integrated with SMART Notebook software, SMART's highly popular lesson delivery application designed specifically for interactive whiteboards.  SMART Response LE comes with 12, 18 or 24 remotes, making it suitable for early education class sizes.  It will be available in the fall of 2009.

Features

  • Large buttons – Five large, colorful buttons make answering questions easy and provide opportunities for tactile engagement
  • Graphic feedback – Visual feedback to questions is especially helpful for early learners who do not read
  • Multiple question types – Multiple choice, true-false and yes-no
  • Long battery life – Two long-lasting AA batteries for each remote
  • Pricing and availability - SMART Response LE has 12, 18 or 24 remotes, a receiver and assessment software.  Suggested education pricing is $999.00, $1299.00 and $1,599.00 respectively.  They will be available in the fall of 2009.

7.  Get Noticed With The NEC MultiSync X461HB.

NEC recently announced the 46-inch MultiSync® X461HB high-bright professional display. This new model is enhanced by more than 30 advanced features of the Digital Signage Technology Suite that allow it to stand out in heavily-lit environments. With a brightness measurement at 1500 cd/m˛ and remarkable contrast ratio of 3500:1, the MultiSync X461HB boasts 110% higher brightness than NEC's previous-generation displays. The MultiSync X Series display is ideal for environments heavy with ambient light, such as corporate lobbies, atriums and restaurants.

NEC's new MultiSync X461HB high-bright display provides an extraordinary amount of brightness that outperforms displays using standard settings, allowing it to be truly noticeable in environments where typical, standard brightness would normally seem dim or washed out. Its advanced features detect nearby light and automatically adjust the display according to its surroundings. Having a brilliant display in a highly-trafficked, brightly-lit area is crucial to getting a message across, and the MultiSync X461HB's unrivaled screen performance is the essential solution to these elements.

The MultiSync X461HB includes ambient light sensor technology, which automatically adjusts the backlight depending on the ambient lighting brightness and maximizes the power management feature. Its advanced thermal protection begins with an extra thermal layer on the display panel to diffuse heat and follows with a fan-based technology specifically designed to work in both landscape and portrait modes. Internal temperature sensors control self-protective circuits, while special self-diagnostics communicate the status of thermal characteristics. The thermal protection can be monitored and controlled both locally and remotely.

The MultiSync X461HB accommodates components such as the MPD-SBC-8/16-2 single-board computer, SB-L008WU DVI daisy-chain module or SB-L007KK HD-SDI card by fully integrating it into the unit's expansion slot. This provides a cost-effective way to source and manage display content, and it eliminates the need for external distribution equipment and power supply, thus providing for a clean look that simplifies installation and reduces maintenance without compromising quality.

The MultiSync X461HB includes the following features:

  • Professional-grade LCD panel and components for the most demanding digital signage industry requirements
  • 1360 x 768 WXGA native resolution in true 16:9 aspect ratio

8.  Mitsubishi’s New WD3300U And XD3200U Ultra-Quiet Projectors.

Mitsubishi continues its commitment to the professional installation market with the release of two new high-brightness installation-purpose projectors using Texas Instruments’ DLP technology.  The XD3200U XGA (1024 x 768 pixels) and widescreen WD3300U WXGA (1280 x 800 pixels) are designed for lecture halls, large classrooms, boardrooms, conference rooms, church sanctuaries and other presentation rooms.

These installation projectors have a new color wheel, body design and lamp drive system that help to increase overall performance, durability and reliability.  These improvements also make installation efficient and cost-effective; our dealers will choose these models for the great installation features, and their customers will appreciate the price and performance.

In the past, dust could sometimes get on the color wheel and interfere with overall color performance.  These new projectors, however, create beautiful colored images with a virtually sealed color wheel that helps prevent dust accumulation.  This new color wheel design, along with an improved airflow cooling duct path, allows both the WD3300U and XD3200U operate at a low 26dBA noise level (low mode).  With these design enhancements United Visual clients can now experience presentations with amazing color performance without being distracted by any projector fan noise.

Both models include a new lamp drive system designed to reduce the overall deterioration rate of the lamp.  This innovative design helps the lamp to retain consistent projection brightness over a longer period of time while maintaining an estimated lamp life of up to 4000 hours in low mode.

A long lamp life dramatically decreases the overall total cost of ownership by reducing the frequency of lamp replacements.  When a lamp exchange is required, these new models are designed with convenient side-loading lamp access, so the projector can stay in place on a shelf or on the ceiling, saving time and money.  Additionally, both of these installation projectors offer a one-year or 500-hour (whichever comes first) limited warranty on the lamp.

The WD3300 shoots a rated 4000 lumens of brightness while the XD3200 blasts a rated 4500 lumens, making these models perfect for displaying bright and vivid images even in large rooms or venues with bright ambient lighting.

Mitsubishi offers optional lenses that support various throw distances and room configurations.  The WD3300U and the XD3200U with its center lens provides a new quick and simple lens- exchange design.  These projectors have a cutout around the centered lens so switching lenses is easier, increasing installation flexibility while decreasing installation time.  They also have motorized vertical and horizontal lens shift, auto focus and zoom, so set-up can easily be completed in minutes.

Most importantly, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America is “greening” its projectors starting with these two models by designing them to be more environmentally friendly with energy- efficient, long lamp life; lead-free solder on all printed circuit boards; digital user manuals; and the use of recycled paper in printed materials and packaging cartons.  These projectors are the first of a series designed to consume less than one-watt of power when in stand-by mode.

The projectors also boast Texas Instruments’ BrilliantColor technology, which uses color- processing algorithms and system-level enhancements for greater brightness and truer, more vibrant colors.  They offer an HDMI input for native digital signals and RJ45 for remote networking management, and a 10-watt audio speaker and variable audio output so that users have the flexibility to adjust a presenter’s volume.

Mitsubishi continually brings new technology to market, particularly that which increases durability and saves time and money over the life of a projector.  Call your United Visual representative to learn more about these products.
